Gov Seyi Makinde

When a man starts to misbehave, you might begin to wonder if he has been enchanted with ‘ efun’ or ‘ eedi’. When I listened to Governor Seyi Makinde yesterday, talking about ‘ vagabonds ‘, I wondered if he had been enchanted with ‘ efun’ or ‘ eedi’.

I wondered if it was the same Governor Makinde, who, a couple of months ago said he was not going to join some people to roll in the mud or fight in the gutter. Yesterday, I not only saw someone rolling in the mud, I saw a man drenched in the dirty water of the gutters.

When I saw former Governor Nyesom Wike saying that he would take interest in the affairs of the PDP in Oyo state, a day before Governor Makinde’s response, I told myself that Governor Makinde’s best approach to Wike would have been to ignore him but I was very certain that Governor Makinde would make the error of replying him.

Gov Seyi Makinde

As I predicted, he did and I am not surprised. Governor Makinde’s greatest weakness is his ego and error of judgment in managing challenging situations. There is no wisdom in throwing weak punches when your enemy is on top of you, with your back to the ground.

Gov Seyi Makinde

Wike didn’t just utter the statement that he is interested in the activities of the PDP in Oyo state. He is fortified by the judgment of the Federal High Court which recognized his faction of the PDP against the Governor Makinde faction.

So, when he said he is interested in the activities of the PDP in Oyo, he wasn’t just blabbing. In the present circumstance, he is capable of being involved in the activities of the PDP anywhere in Nigeria and I think that is the difference between Wike and Makinde in this fight.

Wike is clinical. You may not like him but truth is, he is a goal getter. As much as Governor Makinde and others tried to remove Senator Samuel Anyanwu as National Secretary of the PDP, they couldn’t because Anyanwu got Wike’s backing.

Wike said the botched National Convention of the Makinde faction will not be recognized by the appropriate authorities and it has happened. While Governor Makinde and others were wasting time and resources on the National Convention, Wike and his Group put together a National Caretaker Committee and today, that Committee has been recognized by the Court.

So, if Wike said he is interested in the activities of the PDP in Oyo state, you have no choice but to take him serious because such a situation is within his capacity as of now. On the other hand, everything Governor Makinde promised his faction of the PDP has failed to materialize and that is why I expected him to have humbled himself and keep quiet for now.

Now, let us examine the statement made by Governor Makinde yesterday during the opening of what he called ‘ Oyo state PDP Secretariat ‘.In the first place, I am surprised that Governor Makinde decided to call people together for the opening of an edifice that the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC will not recognize, for now, as the ‘ State Secretariat ‘ of Oyo PDP.

I am very sure that if the INEC wishes to deal with Oyo PDP today, they will definitely deal with the Caretaker Committee headed by the Professor appointed by the Pro-Wike PDP. So, of what use is the wasted efforts by Governor Makinde on a State Secretariat belonging to the PDP?

While Wike keeps convincing his followers by recording concrete and vital victories, Governor Makinde, on the other hand has kept wasting time and resources on trivial and artificial things. I also heard him say that Wike and others have been expelled from the PDP.

That is laughable. Both factions of the PDP claimed that they have expelled some prominent members on either side. Just as the Governor Makinde faction have said that they have expelled Wike, Fayose and others, the Wike faction also claimed to have expelled Governor Makinde and others.

Now, the Federal High Court has directed that the National Caretaker Committee of the PDP is the only recognized National Working Committee, NWC of the PDP. That Committee was put together by the Wike faction. They are the winners now and I think only their expulsion order is valid.

They are saying that they have expelled Governor Makinde and others and in the face of the Law, the expulsion is valid. The Governor Makinde NWC have been barred from parading themselves as such.

Could they have legally expelled Wike and others? The answer is in the negative. Governor Makinde also talked about those he said are wearing rags and dancing in the dead of nights. ( Alakisa to njo loru).

Honestly, in the present circumstance, I think it is the Wike faction who should be singing this kind of song for Governor Makinde and his followers. They are the ones who kept losing grounds in this battle of wits.

I don’t know how someone would keep losing out to his opponents and he would still have the courage to boast. The aspect of Governor Makinde’s statement that amused me the most is when he began to talk about ‘ vagabonds ‘.

When a man has little knowledge of a particular language and he insists on communicating with people with that same language, he would not know when he calls himself a thief. I was surprised to hear him talk about how the PDP was plunged into crisis in 2015 and how that crisis cost former President Goodluck Jonathan and the PDP the Presidency.

I am shocked to know that he knew that and yet, he joined the G-5 to inflict further damages on the PDP in 2023. It is equally surprising that he is now just realizing that some people are vagabonds. When will Governor Makinde be calm, humble and truthful enough to keep a friend for a considerable length of time?

Those he called friends in 2019, the ones he entered into alliance with, are now mostly his enemies. Now, he is just realizing that those who assisted him to get a second term in office in 2023 are vagabonds! It is already too late for Governor Makinde to extricate himself from the woes that befell the PDP in 2023.

Of what importance is the ‘ repentance ‘ of yesterday? That pretentious ‘ repentance ‘ of yesterday is an insult upon injuries to those he betrayed in 2023 and it holds no water. The difference between Wike and Makinde is that Wike doesn’t pretend about who he is and where he is, unlike Governor Makinde.

If Governor Makinde has truly repented, he should have accepted the advice given to him by the former Senate President, Bukola Saraki who advised him against proceeding with the botched National Convention in Ibadan.

As I write this piece, the Governor of Adamawa state, Ahmadu Fintiri is reported to be on his way to the APC. That would leave only Makinde, Bala Mohammed and the Governor of Zamfara States as the Governors remaining in the PDP and I’m sure that the other two apart from Makinde, might exit from the PDP any time from now.

So, when you consider that, who, between Governor Makinde and Nyesom Wike would you consider to be the one dancing with rags on, in the dead of nights? No matter how powerful a man is, if he keeps fighting enemies from every angles at the same time, he is bound to meet with calamity.

I saw so much anger, pride and stubbornness yesterday when the Governor was talking. When a man is angry and under pressure, the best approach for him is to be calm and somber. Except he is prepared to humble himself and embrace Wike, I see no future for Governor Makinde in the PDP moving forward.

That is why I am always amused any time I saw him talking about his successor. I was much more amused when I saw the crowd at Molete yesterday. How can you be opening a State Secretariat of a political party that you are no longer a member of? I have been saying it over and over, Governor Makinde needs rest.

He is a very rich man. So I don’t know how to liken his stubbornness on this matter to that of a poor man. ( Agidi talaka). When Wike said he is interested in Oyo PDP, take him serious. He will want to prove a point and I don’t know how Governor Makinde will be able to contain him when he starts. I don’t see this battle dragging for longer. I can see the killer blow coming.

Sola Abegunde.
