Renowned poet, writer and cultural enthusiast Chief Alabi Ogundepo has died at the age of 84.
The family confirmed his death occurred on Monday, August 24, 2026, in a statement signed by Dupe Ogundepo Falana on their behalf. Funeral arrangements are yet to be announced and will be communicated in due course.
Ogundepo, who hailed from Saki in Oyo State, was celebrated by his family as a distinguished literary figure whose body of work captured the depth of Yoruba culture, tradition, language, history and the wider human experience. According to the family, his writings and public engagements played a major role in preserving and promoting his people’s cultural heritage.

“Through his creative works and public engagements, he contributed significantly to the preservation and promotion of the rich cultural heritage of his people,” the statement said.
His family also remembered him as more than a literary figure, describing the values he lived by and the impact he had on those around him.
“Beyond his literary accomplishments, Chief Alabi Ogundepo was a man of dignity, wisdom and compassion.
“He touched the lives of many through his counsel, friendship, intellectual contributions and commitment to the development of his community.
“His presence commanded respect, while his words often inspired reflection and appreciation of our shared heritage.
“The family is deeply grateful to the many individuals, institutions, traditional leaders, literary communities, friends and well-wishers who have reached out to express their condolences and support at this difficult time.
“While the family mourns the passing of a beloved father, husband, grandfather, relative and friend, we are also comforted by the enduring legacy he leaves behind through his writings, relationships, values and contributions to society.
“Funeral arrangements and other details will be announced by the family in due course. The family kindly requests privacy and prayers as we come to terms with this irreparable loss.
“Chief Alabi Ogundepo may have departed this world, but his voice, his poetry and the memories he created will continue to live on.”
