Recently, Minister of Power, Chief Adebayo Adelabu Penkelemesi has faced criticism for increasing electricity tariffs, leading many Nigerians to doubt his ability to govern effectively should he decide to run for Governor of Oyo State in 2027. It’s important to note that he has previously contested for this position in 2019 with the All Progressive Congress (APC) and again in 2023 with the Accord Party, losing both times to the incumbent, Engr. Seyi Makinde of the People’s Democratic Party.

Despite these issues, Adelabu is a qualified financial expert with a successful career, including over four years as Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria under President Goodluck Jonathan.

He graduated with first-class honors in Accounting from Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, and has attended other prestigious institutions.

Electricity subsidies are crucial for economic improvement in developing countries like Nigeria, where boosting manufacturing rather than relying on extractive or consumable goods is essential for development.

If Agbaakin Parakoyi of Ibadanland is serious about his ambition to become the Governor of Oyo State by 2027, he needs to urgently show his capability by improving life for the people. Many in Oyo State believe he should take this chance to prove he can meet the government’s demands and serve the people effectively. The recent hike in electricity tariffs has made many view him unfavourably, unintelligent and he needs to address these concerns to regain their trust.

This issue has significantly driven up the prices of goods and essential services in the market. Now that he has been given a larger platform to demonstrate his capabilities, it is important that this does not become a stain on his reputation. Better still, he can request a change in the ministry to where he is assigned.

This article should be seen as an urgent call for him to enforce effective solutions to alleviate this hardship. Otherwise, he should abandon his political ambitions once and for all.
