The Nigerian Medical Association has urged Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, to address outstanding arrears and welfare-related issues affecting resident doctors at the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology Teaching Hospital.

The association, in a letter dated September 5, 2026, and signed by the NMA President, Dr. Afekhide Omoti, expressed deep concern over what it described as persistent welfare challenges facing the resident doctors in the hospital.

According to the NMA, the situation could affect patient safety and health outcomes if not addressed urgently.

The NMA said several agreements reached with the Oyo State Government remained unimplemented despite months of advocacy by the resident doctors.

“Among the outstanding issues are the payment of 2025 minimum wage arrears, the 2026 Medical Residency Training Fund, implementation of the corrected professional allowances table, full implementation of the call/work hour regulatory policy, and payment of upgrade and promotion arrears,” the NMA said.

The association noted that the doctors work long hours under intense pressure and constitute the first line of care in the tertiary hospitals.

It warned that “burnout, excessive workload, and poor remuneration are not just welfare issues, they directly affect patient safety and health outcomes for the people of Oyo State.”

The association urged Makinde to intervene personally by directing the immediate implementation of the outstanding agreements.

“The NMA believes that implementing these agreements will immediately de-escalate tensions, restore motivation, and strengthen healthcare delivery in the state,” the letter stated.

It also commended ARD LAUTECH and the Oyo NMA for their patience over the past three months, describing the demands as legitimate.

“The demands are legitimate, and the patience displayed by ARD LAUTECH and the Oyo NMA over the last 3 months deserves commendation,” it said.

The association further called for the establishment of a monitoring mechanism to ensure that all outstanding matters are resolved within 30 days.
