Governor Seyi Makinde’s recent remarks at Chief Michael Koleoso’s burial in Saki have sparked concerns about reopening the religious crisis in Saki West Local Government, Oyo State. His accusations against Bayo Shittu, labeling him the “apostle of religious politics,” lack concrete evidence and warrant scrutiny.
Historically, Muslims in Saki have demonstrated remarkable tolerance and accommodation, electing Christian candidates in various elections, such as Chief Michael Adeniyi Koleoso, Sen. Rorbot Koleoso in 2003, Hon. Akin Ajekigbe Baada in 2007, and Gov. Seyi Makinde in 2019 and 2023. This contradicts Governor Makinde’s claims.
Furthermore, Governor Makinde’s accusations against Bayo Shittu appear hypocritical, considering his own lopsided appointments and low compensation to Muslims who voted for him in Saki. A closer examination of his government’s beneficiaries is necessary.
I suspect a hidden agenda behind Governor Makinde’s statement, aimed at widening the divide between Muslims and Christians in Saki, rather than promoting unity. If hostility arises, security agencies should investigate these actions.
Saki’s people have consistently put aside religious differences to elect leaders, demonstrating their commitment to peaceful coexistence. The Muslim community honored Chief Koleoso at his passing, illustrating this.
My appeal to the people is to remain calm and strategic in their response. Rather than reacting impulsively, it’s crucial to respond thoughtfully, focusing on electing a competent leader who prioritizes community well-being and fairness, regardless of faith.
Moreover, we will conduct a critical analysis of those who have held positions and:
~Failed to promote deserving individuals due to their faith
~Used followers as mere errand boys without genuine empowerment
~Fostered division and discrimination*
This examination will expose any hypocrisy and ensure accountability.
My Muslim brothers and sisters in Saki, let’s prioritize thoughtful responses, strategic leadership, and accountability, ensuring Saki’s progress and harmony. God will soon expose all living hypocrites.
