Emeritus Professor Olufemi Bamiro, born 16th September, 1946 and the 10th Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ibadan, is one of the defining intellectual and administrative figures of modern Nigerian academia. From the workshop of the Department of Mechanical Engineering, Faculty of Technology, University of Ibadan, he rose to become a global scholar, a visionary university administrator and a servant-leader of the country.
Prof. Bamiro’s academic pedigree is impeccable. He earned a B.Sc. with First Class Honours in Mechanical Engineering from Nottingham University, England (1971) on a ShellBP Scholarship and a Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from McGill University, Montreal, Canada (1975), on a Commonwealth Scholarship, completed in the record time of two years and five months with special exemption from a master’s degree. He also held a Post-doctoral Fellowship at McGill (1975) and research fellowships from NSERC/CIDA, UNESCO, ANSTI and Operation Crossroads Africa. He was an Associate Member of ICTP, Trieste (1986-1991).

A registered Mechanical Engineer with the COREN No. 1659, he augmented his expertise with an Advanced Management Programme at Lagos Business School (2002) and training in Management of Higher Education Institutions at the Galilee College, Israel (2005). He is a Fellow of the Solar Energy Society of Nigeria, Nigerian Society of Engineers, Nigerian Academy of Science and Nigerian Academy of Engineering.
Appointed Lecturer Grade I on 1st September, 1975, he was promoted to Senior Lecturer (1978) and Reader (1981) and became the 1st Professor of Mechanical Engineering, UI on 1st October, 1983. After retiring on 1st October, 2012, he was honoured as the 1st Emeritus Professor of Mechanical Engineering, UI on 22nd December, 2021.
As a teacher, he taught 11 undergraduate and 5 postgraduate courses at UI and served as Visiting Professor at the Universities of Zimbabwe and Nairobi. He supervised over 100 undergraduate projects, several master’s, and 7 Ph.D. students. His research output is formidable: 149 university-level publications between 1970 and 2020, comprising 4 books, 4 book chapters, 35 refereed journal articles, 26 conference papers, 54 invited policy papers, 25 technical reports and 1 patent. 85 are single-authored, 55 are co-authored with students/colleagues, and 9 are with foreign collaborators. He also authored academic briefs for the establishment of Redeemer’s University (2003), Federal University of Petroleum Resources, Effurun (2007), Pan-Atlantic University (2013), KolaDaisi University (2014), Lagos State University of Science & Technology and Lagos State University of Education (both 2023).
Prof. Bamiro’s administrative footprint at UI is deep. He served as the Sub-Dean (General), Sub-Dean (Postgraduate), Head of Mechanical Engineering, Dean of Technology, Director of MIS, Chairman of the Senate Curriculum Committee, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration), Acting Vice-Chancellor and Vice-Chancellor from 1st December 2005 to 30th November, 2010.
As VC, he provided transformational leadership that attracted global partnerships. Under his stewardship, UI secured the following:
1. The Centre for Sustainable Development, CESDEV (2009) – selected among 10 universities worldwide by the MacArthur Foundation for the Masters in Development Practice Programme;
2. The Centre for Petroleum, Energy, Economics and Law, CPEEL (2011), a MacArthur-funded multidisciplinary hub for energy policy and training; and
3. The West African Hub of the Pan African University for Life and Earth Sciences, PAULESI (2010), was won after a competitive defence in Lagos and Addis Ababa and is now hosting Master’s and Ph.D. students from across Africa.
These Centres have brought unquantifiable local and international recognition and funding to the University of Ibadan.
Beyond UI, Prof. Bamiro has served Nigeria with distinction. He was the Secretary of the National Energy Panel (1984), a Member of the NSTP Implementation Committee (1987), a Head of Nigeria’s Delegation to Iran (1990), a UNESCO Lead Consultant on STI Reform (2005-2006), a INEC Returning Officer for Oyo State (2011), a Member of the NUC Governing Board (2011-2015) and a Chairman of the Lagos State R&D Grant Council (2012-2015).
From 2012 to 2020, as the Chairman of the TETfund National Research Fund Screening Committee, he oversaw the award of 458 research grants valued at N13.2 billion. He coordinated the NUC review of BMAS for 185 programmes and later chaired the NUC Skills Development Advisory Committee that produced the CCMAS curriculum to address graduate employability. He also chaired the Audit Panel on Take-Off Grants to 12 Universities (2017) and served on the FG Re-Negotiation Team with University Staff Unions (2017).
He has served on the Governing Councils of Redeemers, Bells, Pan-Atlantic and KolaDaisi Universities and as the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of Council at Tai Solarin University of Education (2014-2018) and Elizade University (2020 to date).
Internationally, he was the Chairman of the ECOWAS Regional Chapter of the Pan African Competitiveness Forum (PACF) and Deputy Chairman of its 7-man Executive Board and External Advisor to the British Council on Internationalising Higher Education.
His honours include Lecturer of the Year (1998/99), NSE Merit Award, UN-Habitat Best Practice Award, DG’s Merit Award (2009), CDPGS Award (2010), CESDEV Visionary Award (2010), Distinguished Shell Scholar Award (2013) and Exemplary Leadership Award by TASUED (2018).
Emeritus Professor Bamiro’s career reflects a rare blend of technical depth, scholarly productivity and institutional leadership. As the 10th Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ibadan, he did not only manage the University, he repositioned it for global relevance in sustainable development, energy and African graduate education.
In an era demanding innovation and policy-driven research, his life remains a blueprint that excellence in the classroom must be matched by courage in administration and commitment to national service.
I am eternally grateful to Emeritus Professor Bamiro for his invaluable contribution to my professional and administrative career at the University of Ibadan. Omoluabi ni yin, Sir. Mo mọ̀ rírì yín! (You are a true man of honour, Sir. I deeply appreciate you!).
A devout Christian, Emeritus Professor Bamiro is a true bridge-builder, at home with people of all religious persuasions. In his characteristic spirit of inclusion and tolerance, it was his administration as VC that approved and constructed the Mosque at the Main Gate car park of the University for commercial drivers and other users of the park, a gesture that remains a lasting proof of his broad-minded leadership. He is never given to trivialities.
As part of activities marking the milestone birthday of this distinguished scholar and dedicated researcher, there will be a public presentation of two books today.
The celebration blends thanksgiving with intellectual tribute, a reflection of the celebrant’s enduring love for service, scholarship and institutional memory.
The first book, “Through His Abiding Grace: The Autobiography of Emeritus Professor Olufemi Adebisi Bamiro”, is an inspiring story of faith, scholarship and service. It chronicles the remarkable life journey of a distinguished academic, administrator and former Vice-Chancellor, whose abiding grace and exemplary leadership have shaped generations.
The second book, “Educating for Knowledge Economy and Human Capacity Development in Africa: Essays in Honour of Emeritus Professor Olufemi Bamiro”, edited by Professors Francis Egbokhare, Segun Adedeji and Olatunji Oyeshile is a festschrift of thought-provoking essays by eminent scholars. The volume reflects on education, innovation and human capacity development in Africa, serving as a befitting tribute to a man whose vision continues to shape higher education in Nigeria.
The University of Ibadan and Nigeria are, indeed, richer for his service. An appreciative UI conferred on him a D.Sc (honoris causa) at its last convocation and founder’s day ceremonies on 17 November, 2025 at the International Conference Centre of the institution.
