Politics is often full of people who ask others to believe in them, but true leadership is revealed by what happens to those who believe in them. Over the years, many young people have entered politics with dreams of serving their communities, only to become discouraged when their loyalty and efforts are no longer rewarded. Barrister Seun Temilolu Nurudeen Ashamu has demonstrated a different approach.

Hon. Seun Ashamu

Ashamu, a trained lawyer, learned jurist with international exposure and former Commissioner in Oyo State, he has built a political reputation around empowering people, recommending capable followers and creating opportunities for those genuinely interested in politics and public service.

The 24-part series that preceded this article has provided a compelling glimpse into that philosophy. Across Afijio, Atiba, Ogo-Oluwa, Oyo East, Oyo West, Akinyele, Ona Ara, Iwajowa, Irelope and Surulere, the stories featured people who have grown into councillors, Supervisory Councillors, Special Advisers, political aides, Vice Chairmen, local government officials, mobilisers, strategists and community leaders. Their journeys are different, but the connecting thread is clear: many had political aspirations, and through Barrister Ashamu’s support, recommendations, mentorship and political network, they found opportunities to grow and serve. This is the deeper meaning behind the description “Omoolore”—a man who empowers, builds, recommends, positions and facilitates.

What makes his story particularly relevant to Oyo Federal Constituency is that his experience goes far beyond political networking. Barrister Ashamu is a trained lawyer and learned jurist with international exposure who has served as Commissioner for Energy and Mineral Resources, Commissioner for Environment, and Commissioner for Budget and Economic Planning in Oyo State. These responsibilities gave him practical experience in infrastructure, environmental governance, public finance, economic planning and policy implementation. Combined with his vibrant personality, eloquence, intellectual capacity and determination, he brings a breadth of professional and executive experience that could be valuable in the Green Chamber, where effective representation requires legislative understanding, negotiation, advocacy and the ability to engage government institutions.

His approach also presents a different philosophy of political leadership. While some people have become disillusioned with politics because they felt used during political campaigns and forgotten afterwards, Ashamu’s record suggests that he believes political structures should also create opportunities for those who contribute to them. Not every follower can or should receive an appointment, but identifying potential, mentoring people and recommending capable individuals for positions such as councillor, Supervisory Councillor, Special Adviser, Vice Chairman and other responsibilities demonstrates a belief in investing in human beings. The people featured in the 24-part series are therefore more than names; their stories provide individual examples of how political opportunity, when combined with mentorship and support, can produce new leaders and strengthen communities.

Now seeking to represent Oyo Federal Constituency under the Allied People’s Movement (APM), Barrister Ashamu is asking voters to consider not only what he promises to do, but what his antecedents suggest he is capable of doing. The decision belongs to the people, but one question deserves serious consideration: Before asking the people to entrust you with their future, what have you done with the influence already entrusted to you? For Ashamu, the answer can be found in the people he has empowered, recommended, positioned and mentored. If a man who has spent years building people is given the opportunity to bring that same philosophy, experience and determination to an entire constituency, Oyo Federal Constituency may well be choosing not just a representative, but a builder of people and opportunities.
