As Oyo State marks its golden jubilee, Senator Rilwan Adesoji Akanbi, the Okanlomo of Ibadanland, has paid glowing tribute to the past and present democratically elected governors whose leadership, vision and sacrifices have collectively shaped the state’s development over the last 50 years.
In a commemorative message celebrating Oyo State at 50, Senator Akanbi reflected on the unique contributions of each administration, describing the journey of the Pace Setter State as one driven by progressive ideals, resilience and people-centered governance.
He recalled the late Chief Bola Ige as the man who laid the foundational blocks of modern Oyo State. A committed Awoist and principled progressive, Bola Ige’s administration, according to Akanbi, established the ideological and infrastructural direction that defined the early years of the state.
For late Dr. Victor Omololu Olunloyo, Sen. Akanbi stated that although his tenure was short , he still made impact. A mathematician of note, brilliant and well respected.
After leaving office, he played an advisory role to many governors that came after him.
The Okanlomo,also praised late Chief Kolapo Ishola, describing him as a perfect gentleman and a liberal progressive whose calm disposition and administrative style helped consolidate governance during his tenure.
Special mention was given to Chief Lam Adesina, whom Akanbi described as a “prisoner of war” , a core progressive and a strong disciple of late sage ( Chief Obafemi Awolowo).Hon Rilwan Adesoji Akanbi served under Adesina’s administration, as Special Adviser on Economic and industrial matters ( when oyo state only have 3 special advisers)provided him first-hand experience of purposeful leadership. he also served as Chairman of the State Planning Commission, Chairman of the Special Projects Committee, and State Coordinator of Poverty Eradication Programmes, roles that underscored the administration’s commitment to economic planning and social upliftment.
Senator Akanbi further applauded Oba (Senator) Rashidi Adewolu Ladoja, noting that he brought his vast business expertise into governance. He described Ladoja’s tenure as one that strengthened institutional capacity and emphasized economic prudence, adding that his ascension as the present Olubadan of Ibadanland remains a source of pride to the state.
He described Otunba Christopher Adebayo Alao-Akala as a thorough grassroots politician who connected deeply with the masses and prioritized people-oriented policies, particularly at the community level.
On Senator Abiola Ajimobi, Akanbi highlighted his progressive credentials and public-sector expertise, noting that Ajimobi made history as the first governor to serve Oyo State for two consecutive terms. He credited his administration with reforms that redefined governance and urban management in the state.

The tribute also acknowledged Engineer Seyi Makinde, the incumbent governor, commending his ongoing efforts to consolidate development, promote people oriented programs,infrastructure expansion and deepen good governance across Oyo State.
“Together, these leaders, each with distinct strengths and styles have contributed meaningfully to the growth and development of Oyo State,” Senator Akanbi said. “We are grateful for their service and sacrifices, and we appreciate every one of them, both the living and the departed, for their roles in building the Oyo State we celebrate today.”
As Oyo State clocks 50, the Okanlomo of Ibadanland urged citizens to reflect on the past with gratitude, engage the present with responsibility, and look to the future with renewed commitment to unity, progress and sustainable development.
