The President of the Yoruba Youth Council (YYC), Aare Alawode Rahmon Akintunde, has described the recent statement credited to former Nigerian military Head of State, Ibrahim Babangida, as a strong lesson and timely reminder for leaders across all regions of Nigeria, particularly in Yorubaland.
Aare Alawode, while reacting to Babangida’s passionate appeal to Northern leaders to unite and reclaim the region from decline, said the statement should not only concern the North but should also awaken Yoruba political, traditional, religious, and business leaders to place greater focus on the sustainable development and future of Yorubaland.
According to him, the former military leader’s reflection on regional growth, unity, and strategic leadership underscores the importance of visionary thinking and collective responsibility among leaders.
“The statement by General Ibrahim Babangida clearly shows that every region must intentionally work towards protecting its heritage, advancing development, and securing a better future for coming generations. Yoruba leaders must take this as a challenge to strengthen unity, economic growth, education, security, youth empowerment, and infrastructural development across Yorubaland,” Aare Alawode stated.

He noted that the Yoruba region remains blessed with intellectual capacity, rich culture, economic potential, and influential leaders capable of transforming the region into a model of development in Nigeria and Africa at large.
The YYC President further charged political office holders, traditional rulers, youth groups, and stakeholders in Yorubaland to move beyond political divisions and embrace collective regional interests that would benefit the people.
“Our leaders must begin to prioritize long-term regional prosperity over personal or political interests. The future of Yorubaland depends on strategic collaboration, purposeful leadership, and investment in the youth population,” he added.
Aare Alawode Rahmon Akintunde also urged Yoruba youths to remain actively involved in civic engagement, leadership development, entrepreneurship, and advocacy for good governance, stressing that the future of the region lies heavily on the shoulders of its younger generation.
