Two years and still counting. That’s how long Oyo town has waited—watching, hoping, and praying for a resolution over the delay in the coronation of the new Alaafin.
The Oyomesi, in their wisdom, made a choice and presented the name of Prince Lukman Mafojudola Ayinla Gbadegesin to the Governor for final approval. Yet, here we are: still waiting, facing a silence that grows more unsettling with each passing day. Why should the indigenes of Oyo fold their hands and let time slip away while their royal heritage hangs in the balance?
The truth is hard to swallow, but it must be said that a crisis of this magnitude persists only because some greedy, selfish, and short-sighted individuals benefit from the chaos.
These are not the actions of true custodians of the culture or well-meaning sons and daughters of Oyo. These individuals are not motivated by the well-being of their town but by their narrow interests, seeking profit at the expense of unity and progress.
Oyo town must wake up from its slumber. This rich and historic city has always held a position of prestige in Yorubaland. The Alaafin Stool is the number one Royal Institution in our land—a title that commands respect and reverence, not just within Oyo State but across the entire Yoruba race.
The Alaafin is an Imperial First Class King, a rallying point for development, a custodian of culture, and a symbol of collective strength. It is not just about tradition; it is about the future of Oyo and the prosperity that comes with strong, legitimate leadership.
We cannot afford to ignore the ramifications of this prolonged uncertainty. Without an Alaafin on the throne, Oyo loses a crucial piece of its identity. The development projects, cultural events, and socioeconomic opportunities that come with a stable and fully functional royal institution are being stunted.
The youth, who look to the Alaafin for inspiration and guidance, are left adrift. The elders, who have seen the town flourish under strong leadership, are disheartened. It’s time for the indigenes to refuse to let this stand any longer.
To my Oyo brothers and sisters, as someone who considers Oyo a second home due to the incredible hospitality and accommodating nature of its people, I urge you to reflect and act. Your elected officials—Senator representing Oyo Central, Member of the House of Representatives representing Oyo Federal Constituency, Members of the Oyo State House of Assembly for Atiba, Oyo East, and Oyo West—where do they stand in this matter? What have been their contributions to resolving the issue? Where are the voices of your Commissioners in the current administration, the Chairmen of the local government areas, the prominent leaders, and the elder statesmen?

Consider your reputable clubs and groups, especially the Oyo Global Forum, and the countless social media advocates and comrades who have always been vocal about Oyo’s development. What steps have they taken? What alliances have they built? Have they channelled their influence and platforms to address this crisis, or have they folded their hands and hoped for the best?
These are tough questions, but they must be asked. Let us make this moment a reason to learn from our mistakes and work together. It is clear that only a united Oyo, one that stands together in demanding a resolution, can reclaim the pride and prosperity that the Stool represents.
