Dear Mr. President,
I have carefully read a 38-paragraph response to the #EndBadGovernance protests by Mr. President.. As a youth advocatAe and a sustainable development expert, I believe it is imperative to offer constructive comments and propose solutions to the issues raised.
First and foremost, it is crucial to acknowledge that protests, such as #EndBadGovernance, often arise from genuine concerns and frustrations within society. If there were no underlying problems or challenges, there would be no need for such a response. While it is unfortunate that violence and loss of life occurred during the protests, it is essential to recognize that these incidents are often symptoms of deeper issues. The saying “a hungry man is an angry man” aptly describes the situation—widespread hunger and economic hardship have left many citizens desperate and frustrated.
Mr. President, while it is true that political manipulation by opposition groups may have played a role in the protests, it is also vital to understand that such manipulation can only succeed where there are existing loopholes and grievances. These protests are not just about politics; they are a call for better governance and more responsive leadership. It has been over 12 months since you assumed office, and now is the time to put politics aside and focus on delivering effective governance.
As a progressive youth and a proponent of sustainable development, I would like to propose some sustainable solutions to enhance governance and address the concerns of the populace:
1. PROMOTING DIALOGUE AND CIVIC ENGAGEMENT:
Encourage the establishment of platforms for dialogue between the government and citizens, particularly the youth. These platforms could include town hall meetings at the local government level, digital forums, and public consultations to discuss grievances and collaboratively develop solutions. This would foster a more inclusive and participatory governance process, ensuring that policies reflect the aspirations and needs of all Nigerians.
2. INVESTING IN EDUCATION AND SKILL DEVELOPMENT:
We understand that the introduction and disbursement of student loans is ongoing. I also implore the government to sponsor educational institutions. Expanding educational opportunities and vocational training, particularly in high-demand areas such as technology, renewable energy, and sustainable agriculture, would empower young Nigerians with the skills necessary to thrive in a modern economy, reduce unemployment, and prevent the kind of frustrations that lead to protests.
3. STRENGTHENING SOCIAL SAFETY NETS:
Improve social safety nets to cushion the effects of economic reforms, such as the removal of fuel subsidies and the floatation of our currency, which have led to inflation. This could include targeted food subsidies, which are basic necessities for survival, and support for small businesses. Ensuring that vulnerable populations are protected during economic transitions can help maintain social stability and reduce discontent.
4. SUSTAINABLE ECONOMIC DIVERSIFICATION:
Promote economic diversification beyond the oil sector by investing in renewable energy, agriculture, and technology. Supporting small and medium enterprises (SMEs) and developing local industries can create jobs and reduce dependency on imports. Encouraging the use of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) and other sustainable energy sources can also help reduce costs and environmental impact.

5. INFRASTRUCTURE DEVELOPMENT:
Continue and expand infrastructure projects with a focus on sustainable and inclusive development. Projects like the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway and Sokoto-Badagry Highway should include considerations for environmental sustainability and local community benefits. Infrastructure development should also prioritize access to basic services, such as clean water, sanitation, and electricity, in underserved areas.
6. YOUTH EMPOWERMENT AND INCLUSION:
Implement specific programs aimed at empowering young people, such as the Digital and Creative Enterprises (IDiCE) program and the Nigerian Youth Academy (NIYA). Ensure that these programs are accessible, transparent, and effectively address the needs of the youth. Additionally, support youth entrepreneurship through access to finance, mentorship, and market opportunities.
7. ENVIRONMENTAL SUSTAINABILITY:
Integrate environmental sustainability into all development projects. Encourage sustainable farming practices, reforestation, and the protection of natural resources. Promote the use of renewable energy and reduce the carbon footprint of national projects. This approach not only protects the environment but also ensures long-term economic resilience.

8. GOOD GOVERNANCE AND TRANSPARENCY:
Strengthen governance structures to ensure transparency, accountability, and the rule of law. This includes improving the efficiency and effectiveness of government institutions, combating corruption, and ensuring that public funds are used effectively. Transparent communication from the government can help build trust and reduce misinformation.
9. COMMUNITY RESILIENCE BUILDING:
Develop community resilience programs to help communities better prepare for and respond to economic and social shocks. This includes enhancing local governance, building community infrastructure, and promoting local economic development. By empowering communities, the government can foster a more stable and resilient society.
These solutions, if implemented effectively, can help address the root causes of discontent, promote sustainable development, and build a more equitable and prosperous Nigeria.
