It is saddening and regrettable that, in our own case, education is yet to serve its purpose of liberation and providing a potent weapon, by means of which, one can surmount and break the shackle of poverty. The situation in which many of our youths find themselves after graduating from Institutions of Higher Learning is pitiable that many are not better off when compared with their counterparts who have taken to apprenticeship.

The apprehension of being jobless even after leaving university has endeared many youths to taking to cybercrime popularly known as “Yahoo Yahoo” or if you like, “Yahoo Plus”.

We have seen a situation where boys and girls whose parents are wretched, so to speak, now have millions in their bank accounts, dress shabbily and drive recklessly, the latest car in town. They are also drugs abusers. This, some psychologists suggest, have the tendency to increase the number of persons with lunatic behaviour, in no distant time. This, itself, should be a source of concern to any serious government.

It is commendable that some parents of these sons and daughters of Lucifer condemn their activities and in some cases, denounce them openly. On the contrary, many parents believe that God has answered their long awaited prayer to be out of poverty. They even go to the extent of fortifying their children who indulge in this crime, spiritually.

Similarly, ours laws and their enforcers are not helping the matter. Many of the supposed law enforcers are visibly seen collecting money through cash and bank transfers as if there is no one to check their excesses.

Government needs to pay serious and result-oriented attention to curbing this menace by providing jobs for these teeming yet, unemployed and underemployed youths while empowerment programmes should be provided for persons having the requisite skills.

Parents must be responsible while dealing decisively with anyone indulging in this menace.
