The Oyo State Commissioner for Energy and Mineral Resources, Barrister Seun Ashamu has expressed Oyo State Government’s commitment to increase electricity availability to Oyo state residents at affordable prices.
He made the statement while featuring on Fresh Fm’s Situation Room monitored by FRESHPAGE.COM.NG on Thursday, February 15, 2024 to x-ray the benefits Oyo State will derive from recently signed into law, Electricity Regulatory Commission Bill by Governor Seyi Makinde.
Barrister Ashamu said that the programmed provided with good opportunity to speak with the residents of Oyo State and what Gov Makinde led government is trying to achieve. Barrister Ashamu said that it’s important for Oyo State to know where it started as far as Energy is concerned and set agenda for future sustainable and clean energy.

The Commissioner recalled that the Energy and Mineral Resources Ministry was created in 2019 upon assumption of Governor Makinde in office. Barrister Ashamu clarified that before January 2023, the generation, transmission and distribution of electricity was on exclusive list. The Commissioner said that amendment of Constitution and subsequent signing of Electricity Act by the President paved way for devolution of power.

‘’Through the newly signed by Bill by Governor Makinde, the issue of climate change is giving consideration and keys into what we have been doing in the past four years, our gas agreement with Shell to transit from dirty fossil fuel to gas which is considered clean and green fossil fuel, thereby reducing carbon emission coming out Oyo State and naturally contribute to quota to Oyo’s carbon reduction. The turn-around will also reduce heat wave, heavy rainfall and many others’’.

While speaking about the frantic efforts made by the government since he assumed office, Barrister Ashamu said the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources has deployed and facilitated 25 mini grid across rural areas in state where considerations were given to them to use electricity free for three months before they started paying tariff.
He emphasized the role of energy management since electricity is an utility that consumers will have to pay for before enjoying the services.
