I join other well-wishers, friends, family, and associates in celebrating a remarkable scholar who has dedicated her life to advancing science education and research in Nigeria. Professor Sherifat Adeyinka Aboaba, a renowned Professor of Organic and Natural Product Chemistry, is marking her 55th birthday. This milestone birthday is an opportunity to reflect on her outstanding contributions to the field of chemistry and her commitment to promoting science education in Nigeria.

Professor Aboaba’s academic career spans over two decades, during which she has made significant contributions to the field of chemistry. Her research interests include the synthesis of natural products, the chemistry of essential oils and environmental chemistry. She has published widely in reputable international journals and has supervised numerous undergraduate and postgraduate research projects.

As the pioneer President of the Society of Essential Oil Distillers and Analysts, Professor Aboaba has demonstrated her leadership skills and commitment to promoting science and technology in Nigeria. Her mentorship prowess has earned her recognition from students, who awarded her the most approachable lecturer (female) in the Faculty of Science, University of Ibadan.

Professor Aboaba’s vision includes promoting and supporting research and development in science and technology, enhancing the use of technology in all sectors of the economy and improving the quality of science education in the country. Her work as the Director of Research Management Innovation and Translation at the Foresight Institute of Research and Translation has been instrumental in promoting entrepreneurship and innovation.

In celebrating Professor Aboaba’s 55th birthday, I recognise her as a role model for young scientists and educators in Nigeria. Her dedication to advancing science education and research has inspired many and her contributions to the field of chemistry are invaluable.

Professor Aboaba has also made significant contributions as the Director of the Centre for Entrepreneurship and Innovation (CEI) at the University of Ibadan. In this role, she has played and continues to play a pivotal part in fostering a culture of innovation and entrepreneurship among students, faculty and aspiring entrepreneurs. Under her leadership, the CEI has provided valuable resources and support to aspiring entrepreneurs, helping them turn their ideas into successful ventures. Her experience and expertise in this area have undoubtedly contributed to the growth and development of innovative initiatives within the University community.

The Holy Qur’an says, “And say: My Lord! Increase me in knowledge”. (Quran 20:114). This verse emphasises the importance of seeking knowledge and education, which aligns with Professor Sherifat’s achievements and dedication to her field.

On this special day, I wish Professor Sherifat Adeyinka Aboaba a happy birthday and celebrate her remarkable achievements. May she continue to inspire and mentor future generations of scientists and educators and may her work continue to have a lasting impact on science education and research in Nigeria. Barakallahu fiih!
