The Vice Chancellor of the University of Ibadan, Professor Kayode O. Adebowale mni, FAS, fspsp, has commended the World Bank for facilitating the establishment of an Animal Feed Reference Laboratory in the Department of Animal Science at the University of Ibadan.
This, according to the VC, would help relieve the Federal Government of the heavy burden of financing federal tertiary institutions in the provision of all necessary facilities to make them Centres of Excellence.
The Vice Chancellor gave the commendation while receiving the Registrar/Chief Executive Officer and other officers of the Nigerian Institute of Animal Science (NIAS) in his office during a courtesy visit.
Professor Adebowale assured the NIAS that UI was a right choice to locate the Laboratory given that UI has the capacity needed to host such a project, as it boasts of all needed resources to make it function properly.

The VC said running such a laboratory will not be strange to UI as it already owns a functional Multidisciplinary Central Research Laboratory, where its staff and students conduct different research works.
He assured that the University would provide necessary security and other support that may be required, adding that a committee would be constituted to see to the maintenance and sustainability of the laboratory.
The Vice Chancellor also commended the Department of Animal Science of the University, which has produced two successive Registrars of the NIAS from its stream of alumni.
The Registrar/Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Institute of Animal Science, Professor Udo Herbert, explained that
Ibadan, where the university is situated, is the centre of animal production in the South-western part of Nigeria, and this influenced the choice of UI where it can be of great benefit to the industry, and the entire nation.
He stated that the project is the intervention program of the Livestock Productivity and Resilience Support Project (L-PRES), a World Bank/FGN assisted project with development objectives to improve productivity, commercialisation and resilience of selected Livestock value chains.
The Registrar confirmed that the laboratory equipment, which was procured following the L-PRES/World Bank Procurement process, has been delivered to the Department of Animal Science of the University, in preparation for the final hand-over to the institution.

The Nigerian Institute of Animal Science, established in 2007, is a regulatory body for all matters relating to animal husbandry in Nigeria, regulation of animal feeds, and feeding for the production of high-quality animal proteins.
