Participants at the National Irrigation Forum on Institutional Strengthening and Management of Public Irrigation Schemes/ Annual General Meeting of the Nigerian National Committee on Irrigation and Drainage (NNCID) have conferred the honorary membership of the Committee on the Vice Chancellor of the University of Ibadan, Professor Kayode O. Adebowale, FAS, mni.

The honour was conferred during a courtesy visit of the Committee to the Vice Chancellor in his office because he spoke eloquently on Irrigation and Drainage

The leader of the team, Engr Oyeronke Oluniyi had told the VC that the Committee was in Ibadan for a workshop on the strengthening and management of water resources in the irrigation schemes of Nigeria.

She said the Committee seeks to improve irrigation and drainage systems of the country with a view to impacting agriculture and consequently, food production for the people of the country.

The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Adebowale commended the Committee for its efforts to improve the standard of living of the people of Nigeria.

He urged the committee to consider the Isreali Irrigation systems which ensure that the country’s vegetation is green all year round despite Israel being a dry country.

He noted that Irrigation is about maximising land and water resources adding that
the University of Ibadan relies on its Awba Dam and boreholes to provide municipal water for the University community.

The workshop was facilitated by the Department of Irrigation and Drainage of the Federal Ministry of Water Resources. Participants were drawn from among experts in the Federal Ministry of Water Resources, academics, farmers and journalists. The Nigerian National Committee on Irrigation and Drainage was established in 1976.
