The University of Ibadan will always appreciate its alumni for giving back, thus helping the University to mitigate the shortfall in government’s funding of its research activities.
The Dean of Arts, Professor A. O. Oyeshile made this statement while receiving the Principal Investigator of NEUROAIDS on behalf of the Vice-Chancellor during a courtesy visit.
Professor Oyeshile noted that the University had benefitted immensely from its alumni and appealed that such assistance should not be stopped.
The Principal Investigator, Professor Babafemi Taiwo of Northwestern University, Chicago, Illinois, USA, said he was very happy to have been able to involve UI in the project.
According to him, the project has been on for over 10 years. It started as a research project on HIV/AIDS but has been expanded to include training. So far, 15 Fellows and 2 Ph.Ds have been produced. The project will soon apply for more funding as much work still needs to be done on HIV/AIDS.
The project is a multidisciplinary collaborative research grant between Northwestern University and the University of Ibadan domiciled in the College of Medicine, University of Ibadan but with participants also drawn from the Departments of Psychology and Sociology as well as the Faculty of Pharmacy.
The project seeks to train a cadre of skilled, multidisciplinary researchers and outstanding research support staff, ensuring emergence of broad and integrated NeuroAIDS expertise to grow research capacity in Ibadan and develop targeted interventions and solutions to NeuroAIDS.
