The history of Yorubaland and Ibadan is a fascinating tale of growth, conflict and resilience. From its founding by Lagelu in 1614 to the pivotal events of the 19th century, Ibadan’s story is one of transformation and development.
Ibadan’s early years were marked by significant events, including Lagelu’s installation as the 1st Balogun of Yorubaland by Alaafin Ajagbo in 1640. The city faced destruction and rebuilding, with various leaders contributing to its growth.
Ibadan played a crucial role in several wars, including the Jalumi War against the Fulani Jihadists and the Ekiti Parapo War. The city’s warriors, led by notable figures like Balogun Ibikunle and Aare Latoosa, demonstrated bravery and strategic leadership.
Islam and Christianity both took root in Ibadan during the 19th century. The city’s first mosque was established in the Ayeye area, while Christian missionaries like Rev. David Hinderer introduced western education and established churches.
Ibadan’s system of governance evolved over time, with the city adopting a republican system under Baale Oyesile Olugbode. Notable leaders like Bashorun Oluyole and Balogun Ogunmola played important roles in shaping the city’s history.

The history of Yorubaland and Ibadan is proof of the region’s rich cultural heritage and resilience. From its early days to the present, Ibadan has continued to evolve, shaped by the interactions of its people and the events that have unfolded.
I am not an authority on Ibadanland’s history, I only attempt to provide a seemingly engaging overview of the historical events that have shaped Yorubaland and Ibadan.
