The Senate Committee on the South West Development Commission (SWDC), chaired by Senator Yunus Akintunde, held its inaugural sitting yesterday at the Senate Chambers of the National Assembly. Senator Gbenga Daniel serves as Vice Chairman of the Committee.
Addressing the public and members of the press after the sitting, Senator Akintunde reaffirmed the Committee’s dedication to ensuring the prompt development of legal and policy frameworks necessary for the effective implementation of the Commission’s mandate.

“Following President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s assent to the South West Development Commission Act and the establishment of this Senate Committee to provide legislative oversight, we are committed to hitting the ground running,” Senator Akintunde stated.

During the sitting, a proposed work plan for the Committee was adopted. The next phase of the Committee’s work is the screening of the President’s nominees for the Board and Management of the Commission. This process is aimed at facilitating a robust policy design and ensuring the seamless rollout of development initiatives across the South West region.
Senator Akintunde expressed appreciation for the dedication of Committee members who attended the meeting despite the Senate being in recess and the short notice given. He assured the public that the confidence placed in the Committee by President Tinubu will be fully justified.
“We trust the capacity of the nominees selected by Mr. President. However, due diligence through a comprehensive screening will commence immediately, with the session scheduled to hold today at the Senate Chambers,” he added.

Senator Olubunmi Adetunmbi – Nominee for Chairman of the Board
Dr. Akinola – Nominee for Managing Director
Alhaji Fatai Ibikunle – Nominee for Executive Director, Commercial and Environmental Development
Dr. Ibrahim Olaifa – Nominee for Board Member
These individuals, among others, are scheduled to appear before the Committee for screening under the leadership of Senator Yunus Akintunde.
