The Ibadan traditional institution is witnessing a defining moment under the reign of His Imperial Majesty, Oba Rashidi Adewolu Ladoja, the Olubadan of Ibadanland. Once again, the revered monarch has demonstrated uncommon courage, sanity, and foresight by placing merit above monetary influence in the process of selecting who should occupy the prestigious Jagun Olubadan title.
In a society where many expect titles to follow speed or financial strength, the Olubadan has chosen a higher path integrity, impact, and service. This deliberate decision has naturally raised questions in some quarters as to why a Jagun Olubadan has not yet been installed, especially since the Otun line, from which Oba Ladoja ascended, has been duly filled and other senior chiefs elevated.
The answer is simple yet profound: the Olubadan is searching for the most deserving hand.
Findings reveal that over 100 Mogajis applied for the Jagun Olubadan position and are currently undergoing a thorough screening process by a committee constituted by the Olubadan himself. This unprecedented exercise underscores a new benchmark in Ibadan’s traditional governance—titles must reflect proven contribution, visible impact, and unwavering commitment to Ibadanland, not mere entitlement.

This reform-driven approach strengthens the credibility of the Olubadan system, restores public confidence, and sends a powerful message to present and future generations: service earns honour.
As an Ibadan son, a public analyst, President of the Yoruba Youth Council, and an intending Mogaji of Ibadanland, I salute His Imperial Majesty for this bold reform. By enthroning merit, the Olubadan is not only preserving tradition but elevating it to meet the demands of modern leadership and accountability.
Indeed, Ibadan is setting the pace once again.
