In the realm of academia, few individuals epitomise the values of excellence, integrity and service as profoundly as Professor Babatunde Ikotun. As he celebrates his 78th birthday, the academic community, his students, and all who have had the privilege of knowing him pause to honour his remarkable life and legacy.
This piece is, therefore, a heartfelt tribute to a man who exemplifies the essence of gentleness, a quintessential man of peace who radiates warmth and kindness. Professor Ikotun is a gentle giant, a man who is “gentler than the gentlest”. I do not know if such a phrase exists in English to describe this quintessential man of peace. He is a decent socialite who treats everyone with respect and dignity. He relates to me as a like-minded person. His humane outlook makes life easier for those around him, and his ability to relate with people of all ages and backgrounds is proof of his exceptional character. He is a man who confers respect and status on everyone, making them feel valued and appreciated. As we celebrate his life and legacy, we are reminded of the power of kindness, humility and compassion. Professor Ikotun’s life is a classic example of what it means to live a life of purpose and meaning.
January 9, 1948, marked the birth of Professor Babatunde Ikotun in Zaria, Kaduna State. His educational journey began in Makurdi, Benue State, at All Saints and Christ African Church Primary Schools from 1952 to 1959. He then proceeded to Government College, Ibadan, from 1962 to 1966, where he was a recipient of the Western Nigeria Scholarship for his higher school studies.
In 1969, Professor Ikotun was admitted to the University of Ibadan to study Agricultural Biology, sponsored by the Federal Government of Nigeria. He graduated with a Second Class upper degree in 1972 and was awarded a Ford Foundation/University of Ibadan Staff Development Fellowship to pursue a PhD in plant pathology at the Imperial College of Science and Technology, University of London. This scholarship enabled him to further his studies, laying the foundation for his illustrious academic career.
Professor Ikotun’s remarkable and inspiring journey is evidence of his exceptional abilities and dedication to excellence. During his time at Government College Ibadan, he showcased his prowess as a sportsman, playing Hockey and Cricket, and throwing Javelin and Discus. This trend continued at the University of Ibadan, where he further honed his skills, representing the institution with pride. Even as he pursued his PhD at the University of London, Professor Ikotun remained committed to sports, playing Hockey and Cricket, and throwing Javelin and Discus for the University. Throughout his years of study, Professor Ikotun was a highly acknowledged sportsman, earning recognition for his outstanding achievements in Hockey, Cricket, Javelin and Discus. His remarkable sporting career is a shining example of his versatility, discipline and passion for excellence.
In 1975, Professor Babatunde Ikotun returned to the University of Ibadan as a Lecturer II, marking the beginning of a distinguished academic career. He was promoted to Professor of Plant Pathology in 1989, a testament to his expertise and contributions to the field.
From 1975-2018, Professor Ikotun taught ten phytopathological courses, inspiring generations of students at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. He also supervised numerous dissertations and theses, including 49 B.Sc., 67 MSc., 4 M.Phil., and 32 PhD at Njala University and the University of Ibadan.
Professor Ikotun’s leadership skills were recognised, and he was appointed Dean of Students from 1991-1996, Head of the Department of Crop Protection and Environmental Biology (2001-2002) and Dean of the Faculty of Agriculture and Forestry, University of Ibadan (2000-2004). He was later appointed Foundation Dean, Faculty of Forestry and Horticulture, Njala University, Sierra Leone, from 2007-2010. In October 2012, Professor Ikotun took on a new challenge as the Foundation Vice-Chancellor of Southwestern University, Ogun State, a position he held until September 2016. Additionally, he served as Chairman of the Sports Council at the University of Ibadan from 2004 to 2007, where he leveraged his passion for sports to promote athletic development. Generations to come will remember his contributions to the University of Ibadan, Njala University, Sierra Leone and Southwestern University.
His active involvement in numerous scientific and professional societies, both in Nigeria and globally, marks Professor Ikotun’s impressive career. As a respected member of these esteemed organisations, he contributed significantly to the advancement of his field. Throughout his illustrious career, Professor Ikotun published an impressive 170 articles in reputable Nigerian and foreign journals, showcasing his expertise and research prowess. His groundbreaking work has been widely recognised, cementing his position as a leading authority in his field.
As Professor Ikotun turns 78, I join him in being thankful for his family, love and legacy of excellence. Married and blessed with three lovely adult children and grandchildren, his personal life is a tribute to God’s goodness. I pray for continued joy, peace and fulfilment in his life and for his family to remain a source of strength and inspiration. May his remarkable achievements in academia, sports and leadership continue to inspire generations.
