Barrister Seun Ashamu, Oyo State Commissioner for Energy and Mineral Resources, has revealed the key components that will drive stable electricity supply in Nigeria.
Barrister Ashamu said recently signed Electricity Act by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and domestication of Electricity Regulatory Commission Bill by Governor Seyi Makinde has pitched Oyo State the first in Nigeria to sign electricity bill into law.
Barrister Ashamu made the statement while featuring on a programme tagged Situation Room on Fresh Fm monitored by FRESHPAGE.COM.NG.
Barrister Ashamu said with the signing of Electricity Act into Law, it’s important to unbundle DisCos so that 36 states and FCT will have at least one DisCo and change dynamics of shareholding of 40% . This he said will attract investors and change electricity value chain.

He identified two key components to make electricity work in Nigeria; cast iron contract and liquidity which flow through entire value-chain from generation, transmission and distribution where end users pay for what they consumed.
Speaking further on what Oyo state stands to achieve with the signing of the bill, Ashamu said the state can regulate electricity upon completing transition to achieve energy security.

”I have pending application of 3MW of IPP from Nigerian Breweries, bat was 1.4 MW, State government has commissioned 11 MW of IPP and have an aggregate of 2.53MW done in first Omi Tuntun 1.0. We are expecting more investors who ready to make use of our water bodies and dams’’.
While speaking on the giant strides recorded by administration of Governor Makinde, Hon, Ashamu said over half of Light-Up Oyo projects is powered by gas. He noted that transition is ongoing. He appealed to vandals of poles and those that use it as stopper to desist from the act of destroying public infrastructures.

Barrister Ashamu while responding on the state of dams in the state reinstated that Ikere Gorge Dam remains the asset of the federal government. He stated that the project was initially developed for irrigation and water resources. He stressed that electricity was secondary in the project. He pointed that equipment over there are obsolete.

The commissioner assured all and sundry that government will continue to take decision that impact the lives of Oyo residents.
