The Department of Adult Education in collaboration with the UNESCO has celebrated the International Literacy Day 2022.
The team was at Apatere village, Lagelu Local Government Area of the State, where a literacy programme was put together for the indigenes of the area.
According to the coordinator, Professor Omobola Adelore, the focus of this year’s celebration was on Integrated Rural Literacy. The women of the village were taught Organic Agriculture, how to grow vegetables. She said land was provided by the community while UNESCO will be providing gadgets such as tablets, Android phones and content development.
According to Professor Adelore, the Department seeks to create a Digital Hub to train and empower ten thousand facilitators.
During a courtesy visit to the Vice-Chancellor, the Department of Adult Education was congratulated on a successful project.

The Deputy Vice-Chancellor Academic, Professor Aderonke Baiyeroju, who represented the Vice-Chancellor said it was heartening that UNESCO sees UI as a partner in progress. She assured that efforts will be made to resuscitate the UNESCO professorial chair in the Department of Adult Education.
The representative of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), Dr. Stephen Onyekwelu said he was always happy to visit UI.
He recalled that Professor Michael Omolewa who served the UNESCO, was a worthy ambassador of the University.
Dr Onyekwelu who expressed his Regional Director’s appreciation to UI urged the University to leverage the cordial relationship between the two organisations.
