What could be described as barbaric in the 21st century among students happened at Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife as mob reportedly beaten a 500-level student to death for allegedly stealing mobile phone.
According to the Punch, the sad incident happened on Monday in Awo Hall, the victim was beaten to pulp before moved to another location on campus in the early hours of Tuesday where he remained till noon.
Due to severe beating the final year student received from mob, his health condition deteriorated and rushed to the OAU Teaching Hospital, Ile-Ife where he was confirmed dead.
The Public Relations Officer of the University, Abiodun Olanrewaju while confirming the sad incident said, ” A student died and the management is investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident. We will make our position known after investigation”.
Folahan Olayiwola, President, OAU Students’ Union in a statement said the deceased was assaulted by mob at Awo Hall on Monday and was later declared dead on arrival at the OAU Teaching Hospital.
