The recent announcement of Prince Akeem Abimbola Owoade as the new Alaafin of Oyo has generated widespread interest and debate. While some have expressed reservations about the selection process, I think that Governor Seyi Makinde’s choice is a wise and commendable one.
Oba Akeem Abimbola Owoade, the new Alaafin of Oyo, has a robust and impressive educational background. He completed his secondary education at the Baptist High School, Saki, Oyo State, in 1992. He then pursued his passion for engineering, earning a National Diploma from The Federal Polytechnic, Ilaro and a Higher National Diploma from The Polytechnic, Ibadan (TPI) both in Mechanical Engineering. Oba Owoade furthered his education in the United Kingdom, obtaining a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Sunderland and a Master of Science from Northumbria. He also achieved Project Management Professional (PMP) certification.
Also, he has exposure, having worked in top engineering positions in the UK and Canada.
His selection is a testament to the Governor’s commitment to meritocracy and progress.
It is also noteworthy that Governor Makinde consulted with Professor Ogunwande Ifagbemi Sangodaunsi Abimbola, a renowned Ifa priest, a Professor of Ifa divination who was installed as the Awise Awo Agbaye in 1981 at Ile Ife, a former Vice Chancellor, University of Ife now Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), a third republic Majority Leader of the Nigerian Senate, who is also an Oyo indigene, to ensure that the selection process was thorough and inclusive.
This move demonstrates Governor Makinde’s respect for tradition and his willingness to engage with diverse stakeholders.

While some may question the role of Ifa divination in modern governance, I believe that it is essential to acknowledge and respect the cultural heritage of the Yorubas. The use of Ifa divination in this context serves as a symbol of continuity with the past and a commitment to the values of wisdom, justice, and fairness.
I commend Governor Seyi Makinde for his courageous and wise decision in selecting Oba Akeem Abimbola Owoade as the new Alaafin of Oyo.
I am confident that the new monarch will bring dignity, wisdom and progress to the revered throne, and I look forward to his reign with optimism. Kabiyesi o!
