This is a landmark that is worth celebrating: the University of Ibadan’s rich history and continued pursuit of greatness.
November 17, 1948, holds a special place in the history of the University of Ibadan (UI), marking the day the foundation of its permanent site was laid in 1948, symbolising its commitment to academic excellence and innovation.
This iconic date in the University of Ibadan’s calendar followed the commencement of lectures on January 18, 1948, with 104 pioneering students at the Eleyele site, a former military cantonment repurposed after World War II.
As we reflect on the University’s journey, we are reminded of the visionaries who laid the foundation for greatness. Arthur Creech Jones, Kenneth Mellanby and Sir William Hamilton Fyfe, among others, played pivotal roles in shaping the institution into what it is today—a hub of learning and a beacon of hope for generations to come.

Over the years, the University of Ibadan has continued to uphold its tradition of excellence, producing leaders in various fields and contributing significantly to national development.
As we celebrate another year of achievements, I acknowledge the tireless efforts of successive administrations to the current one being led by Professor Kayode Adebowale, mni, FAS, fspsp, the 13th Vice-Chancellor, faculty, staff, alumni and students, who have worked together to make the University a centre of academic excellence.
I wish the University of Ibadan, the first and best University in Nigeria, the first in West Africa, 7th in Africa and one of the most prestigious Universities in the world, many more years of growth, innovation and impact!
