Dr. Yunus Akintunde the Distinguished Senator representing Oyo Central Senatorial District at the Senate has expressed deep sympathy to the affected victims of Tuesday inferno that occured at the popular Aleshinloye Market in Ibadan Oyo State.
In a statement released to the media through Kunle Olatunji, his Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, he prayed for the affected victims who lost several goods and assets during the inferno which according to official statement occured in the early hours of Tuesday.
“It was quite shocking to learn about the sad incidence of Aleshinloye Market inferno and I join well meaning Nigerians to express my deepest sympathy to the affected victims”.
“I like to suggest that while thorough investigations will be on going to unravel the cause of the inferno, the entire system including government and stakeholders should be concerned about this challenge of fire disasters that have become incessant recurring decimal across the State and many communities across the Nation in recent times”.
Senator Akintunde, an expert in Energy and Environment is the Chairman Senate House Committee on Environment at the National Assembly made several recommendations in these regards.
“In our regular evaluation of various reports of similar fire outbreaks across the Nation, it has become absolutely necessary and urgent as a nation and government for us to review the construction and redesign of our markets and commercial centres to meet international standards in our various attempts to mitigate the challenges of future reoccurrence of fire disasters in our various establishments and communities”.
“Access to quality service delivery with modern fire fighting equipment and facilities, training and re training of professionals on managing such disasters when it becomes unavoidable are immediate urgent measures the government and critical stakeholders must put in place to curb the incessant incidence of Inferno”
“Technical control measures and routine facility maintenance, checks and regular evaluation of present designs of market facilities for upgrade and constant improvement are no doubt necessary for our system to meet prevailing international standards and Senate House Committee on Environment will continue to work in synergy with various stakeholders in these regards making recommendations and crating enabling laws and legislations to facilitate these positioning of issues”.
“I sympathize with the government and the good people of Oyo State on this unfortunate fire disaster at Aleshinloye Market, a very strategic and popular commercial centre while pleading with the government and well meaning Nigerians to provide support and succor to the affected victims”.
“In addition, we will constantly assure to reach and make recommendations to relevant disaster management agencies such as NEMA, NESREA among others at the Federal and State levels for further support and assistance as well as monitoring of rehabilitation and reconstruction programs on the affected parts of the market ”
