Prof. Adebowale while commiserating with family

The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Kayode O. Adebowale has led a team from the University of Ibadan to pay a condolence visit to the family of late Professor Akin Mabogunje.

While commiserating with the widow, Justice Titilola Mabogunje (retired), the VC recalled that Prof Mabogunje served the University of Ibadan in many capacities as Head of Department, Dean of Faculty, and as a member of Senate who participated actively in many Committees of Senate and Council.

Professor Adebowale noted that Professor Mabogunje’s intellectual contribution helped shape the discipline of Geography not only in UI but all over the world as the first African to obtain a Ph.D in Geography.

The Vice-Chancellor stated that the entire University of Ibadan community was commiserating with the family as well as itself over Professor Mabogunje’s death.

He described the late Professor as a man of integrity, hardwork and patriotism who made commendable contributions to the planning of Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory.

“The legacies of Professor Mabogunje will remain as footprints in the annals of the University of Ibadan. Adieu, erudite scholar” Professor Adebowale wrote in the Book of Tributes.

Justice Titilola Mabogunje said her husband never asked for too much adding that he died a peaceful death.

A daughter of the late Professor, Mrs Bimpe Oye thanked the visiting UI team on behalf of the family.
She recalled that even though her father was very ill during his last days, he never once complained until he took his last breath.

The Registrar, Mrs Olubunmi O. Faluyi said prayers for the family.

On the Vice-Chancellor’s entourage were the Registrar, Mrs Olubunmi O. Faluyi; Dean of the Faculty of the Social Sciences, Professor E. E. Nwokocha; immediate past Dean of the Faculty, Professor Catherine O. Chowen; Head of Department of Geography, Professor Ibidun O. Adelekan; Principal Assistant Registrar/Public Relations Officer in the Directorate of Public Communication, Mrs Adejoke O. Akinpelu; Senior Assistant Registrar in the Office of the Vice-Chancellor, Mr A. S. Adeniji; and the Principal Protocol Officer, Mr A. O. Jolayemi.
