It was historic on Thursday, October 14, 2021 as the Governing Council of the University of Ibadan announced appointment of Prof. Kayode Oyebode Adebowale as the substantive Vice Chancellor of the University of Ibadan.
No doubt, his emergence as new VC was rough and tough as it takes months for Council to ratify his appointment.
The newly appointed VC was born on January 11, 1962 in Ibadan to Adebowale’s family.
Interestingly, Prof. Adebowale emerged the 13th Vice Chancellor of the University of Ibadan. He will be succeeding Prof. Idowu Olayinka in office by December 1, 2021.
He became the first Ibadan indigene to emerge Vice Chancellor of the University of Ibadan since its inception in 1948, spanning almost 73 years.

He became the first lecturer from the Department of Chemistry, Faculty of Science to emerge Vice Chancellor of UI. He holds first degree and post graduate degrees from the Department of Chemistry, University of Ibadan.
He began his career as a Graduate Assistant in the Department of Chemistry in 1987, he was promoted to the rank of professor in 2006.

Prof. Adebowale became the first to emerge as Vice Chancellor for a single 5-year term under two Governing Council Chairmen; first he was announced Vice Chancellor under Mr. Joshua Waklek before the process that produced him was frustrated and cancelled. He emerged the VC under the newly constituted Governing Council led by Chief John Odigie-Oyegun.
He was first appointed by the Governing Council as the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Administration) in June 2018 and re-appointed for a second term in 2020.
Prof. Adebowale has published over 120 articles in both local and international journals of repute. He had supervised countless B.Sc projects, over 150 M.Sc dissertation and 15 doctoralt students.
