World Teachers'Day

The service of teachers and their contribution to education can never be overemphasized and are thus acknowledged on World Teachers’ Day. The day offers an ample opportunity to examine and consider the challenges bedeviling the Teaching Profession and again, to recognise the rights, privileges and responsibilities of teachers.

However, with each year passing by, teachers’ welfare is neglected especially by the ruling elite of Nigeria. If today is worthy of celebration at all, then it is about being thankful to God Almighty, at least, for the gift of life. The conditions of teachers, across our educational development, is appalling in that, not many students are eager to succeed their teachers, if opportunities come at all.

A pragmatic harbinger of the foregoing is currently playing itself out in our Institutions of Higher Learning as Academics have been on strike for several months now without a date for resumption in sight whereas, our Politicians are more concerned with how to win elections in few months to come. The consequences of strike are better imagined.

Another sad aspect remains that, many of the students whose time and future are being wasted by the governing authorities are parts of persons being recruited as compaigners, volunteers and to say the least, political thugs for the coming elections. What a country!

While celebrating our teachers across our education sector, we must continue to have faith in the fact that, there shall come a time, not too distant from now, when teachers would take their rightful place and recognition.
