The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ibadan, Professor Kayode Adebowale, has stated that the University of Ibadan is still maintaining its First and Best position in Nigeria as it celebrates 74 years.
He made the assertion at the 2022 convocation special Jumat prayer held at the University of Ibadan Central Mosque on Friday, 11 November, 2022.
Professor Adebowale noted that the Times Higher Institutions Ranking placed UI as the First in Nigeria, among the best in Africa and one of the Best in the world.
He said despite the national industrial strike action embarked upon for eight months by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), the University of Ibadan still recorded substantial and laudable achievements since the 2021 convocation.
He noted that as UI students are performing excellently at home, they are also exhibiting the excellent Spirit of the University abroad.
The VC said some of the achievements are: training of 25 mathematics teachers from Oyo State public and private schools by the Institute of Education; a 300 level Botany student emerging as one of the ten innovators in the 2022 National Enterprise Challenge organised by Directors of Entrepreneurship Centres in the Southwestern Nigerian Universities; University of Ibadan representatives winning the 2021 edition of the West African tour of Arab African International Kolledge Programming contest; and the Department of Food Technology on behalf of the Western Chapter of the Institute of Science and Technology hosting the 2022 Regional Science and Technology Summit.
Professor Adebowale thanked the University Muslim community for prayers and being a strong force behind the peace that reigns in UI adding that “it takes peace to sustain purpose and progress.”
The President, UI Muslim community, Prof. Musiliu Onilude in his welcome address said UI Muslim community will continue to pray for peaceful co-existence in UI. He congratulated all graduands and wished them well.
The Chief Imam of the University of Ibadan Central Mosque, Prof. M. O. Abdul-Rahmon had earlier led the convocation special Jumat prayer in the mosque.
