Executive Committee members of the University of Ibadan’s oldest club, Sigma Club have visited the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Kayode Adebowale.
The club was led by the Sigma Chief, Mr Lucky Eluwa, a 400-level student of the Department of Music and accompanied by the Chairman of the Sigma Foundation, retired Professor G.B. Ogunmola.
The Sigma Chief thanked the Prof. Adebowale for being represented at the Club’s Children Day activity.
He said the visit was to intimate the Vice-Chancellor with the Club’s programmes for the year. Mr Eluwa said the Club intends to resuscitate the Havana Musical Carnival suspended some years back and reiterated the Club’s request for a piece of land to build the Sigma House/Hostel.
He also stated that the Club had hitherto been giving annual scholarships worth 100 thousand naira each to 10 indigent but diligent students of the University of Ibadan adding that the Club intends to increase the number to 25 this year.
The Chairman of the Sigma Foundation, retired Professor G.B. Ogunmola prayed that the tenure of Professor Adebowale who was once his student will be peaceful and beneficial to the University of Ibadan.
He said the Sigma Club has been on its request for a piece of land for over 20 years and has been able to get sponsors but all it requires is a piece of land on which to situate the building.
The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Adebowale appreciated his former lecturer and mentor for the visit.
He thanked the Sigma Club for the annual scholarships to the students of the University of Ibadan.
The Vice-Chancellor however explained that the land of the University belongs to the government and as such can not be allocated in perpetuity to any individual.
He said that agreements for all the Hostel projects being embarked upon are all on Build-Operate-Transfer bases. He however, advised the Club to re-present its request for reconsideration.
The Sigma Club is a well over 70 year old, very unique well established Students organisation that has continuously demonstrated leadership qualities. The Club is strictly for the students of the University of Ibadan. Individuals who exhibit Sigma qualities are sometimes elected Honorary members of the Club. Its Motto is “For all that is pure”
