One of such public servants is Dr. Zacch Adelabu Adedeji, the Executive Chairman of the Nigeria Revenue Service (NRS), whose career has been defined by excellence, competence, and remarkable administrative achievements.
Born on January 8, 1978, Dr. Adedeji hails from Iwo-Ate in Ogo-Oluwa Local Government Area of Oyo State. He is a distinguished accountant, tax administrator, and public finance expert whose academic accomplishments reflect his commitment to excellence.
He began his educational journey with a National Diploma in Accountancy from the Federal Polytechnic, Ede, Osun State, before proceeding to Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), where he obtained a First-Class Bachelor’s Degree in Management and Accounting, a Master of Science (M.Sc.) in Accounting, and a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Accounting. He further broadened his knowledge by completing an Executive Course in Economic Development at the Harvard Kennedy School, United States.

Dr. Adedeji’s public service career is a testament to the fact that competence often attracts greater responsibilities. Over the years, he has served in several strategic positions with outstanding records of performance. He was the Commissioner for Finance, Oyo State (2011–2015) under the administration of former Governor Senator Abiola Ajimobi, where he contributed significantly to fiscal reforms and prudent financial management.
He also served as the Executive Secretary and Chief Executive Officer of the National Sugar Development Council (NSDC), where he championed initiatives aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s sugar industry and established the Nigeria Sugar Institute to promote local capacity development.

His expertise later earned him the position of Special Adviser to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, on Revenue, before his appointment as the Executive Chairman of the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS), which subsequently transitioned into the Nigeria Revenue Service (NRS).
Today, Dr. Zacch Adedeji is widely regarded as one of the key technocrats driving the fiscal and revenue reforms of the current administration. His leadership at the NRS has produced measurable results and demonstrated that efficient governance can significantly impact national development.
Among his notable achievements are:
Leading the agency to a record tax revenue generation of approximately ₦28.3 trillion in 2025, surpassing established targets.
Introducing technology-driven reforms and automated tax administration systems to improve operational efficiency and taxpayer services.
Implementing an integrated tax administration framework that simplifies tax compliance and reduces bureaucratic bottlenecks.
Playing a strategic role in advancing the National Single Window Initiative, aimed at improving import and export procedures, enhancing transparency, and reducing cargo clearance time.
Driving institutional restructuring through the adoption of global best practices and investment in staff development and capacity building.
Strengthening local industrial development during his tenure at the NSDC through the establishment of the Nigeria Sugar Institute.
Overseeing the successful completion of the new NRS Headquarters in Abuja, bringing to an end over two decades of institutional uncertainty and infrastructural delays.
The journey of Dr. Zacch Adedeji offers an important lesson in the relationship between politics, power, and followers.
