I celebrate Professor Abel Idowu Olayinka, FAS, a distinguished Nigerian geophysicist, academic leader and advocate for excellence. Born on February 16, 1958, he is a shining example of dedication and service.
Professor Olayinka’s remarkable journey is a testament to his dedication to excellence. As the former Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ibadan and President of the West African Research and Innovation Management Association (WARIMA), he has left a permanent mark on Nigeria’s academic landscape.

His pioneering geophysics research has laid the groundwork for future generations, while his championing of academic innovation and leadership has inspired countless individuals. Through his work, he has empowered students and scholars, fostering a culture of excellence in STEM fields.
A Fellow of the Nigerian Academy of Science and a Chartered Geologist with the Geological Society of London, Professor Olayinka’s achievements are a reflection of his dedication. With several scholarly articles and books, he has bridged the gap between academia and community development, fostering regional collaboration and growth.

An appreciative Central Council of Ibadan Indigenes (CCII) on Saturday, April 10, 2021, Â conferred on him the title of “The Most Outstanding Friend of Ibadanland” (MOFI). The award was presented at the grand finale of the 2021 Ibadan Cultural Festival (ICF) at the Liberty Stadium, Ibadan. The award, presented by the late Olubadan of Ibadanland, His Imperial Majesty, Oba Saliu Akanmu Adetunji, recognised his contributions to elevating the University of Ibadan’s ranking and achievements. The award’s significance extends beyond individual recognition, highlighting the importance of community engagement and service.

As we celebrate the 68th birthday of a man of UI tradition, I honour a legacy that continues to inspire and uplift. His impact will be felt for generations to come. Interestingly, we are both residents of Sultan Bello Hall, University of Ibadan.
