The retiring Commissioner of Police, Abiodun Alamutu, has said that his only regret as he bows out of office after 35 years of service was his inability to get the killers of the Late Finance Director, Taiwo Oyekanmi attached to Ogun Governor’s Office, Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta.

Oyekanmi was ambushed and shot dead on November 29, 2023, while returning from the bank where he went to withdraw some funds for the state.

About five gunmen reportedly blocked the bullion van Oyekanmi was in while it was ascending the popular Kuto Bridge in Abeokuta, opened fire on the official, broke the bullion van door with sledgehammers and carted away huge some of money.

Oyekanmi was pronounced dead on getting to the State Hospital, Ijaye, Abeokuta.

Punch reports Dapo Abiodun placed a bounty of N50m for anyone who had information that could lead to the arrest of the assailants, yet, one year after no arrest has been made.

Alamutu who pulled out of service on Monday after 35 years of meritorious service, in an interview with newsmen said that his only regret was the command’s inability to apprehend the assailants in the last one year.

He explained that despite the police efforts to track down the culprits, lack of information and intelligence to work with made it difficult for the police to have a breakthrough over the tragic incident.

He nonetheless expressed confidence and prayed that his successor would continue from where he stopped in ensuring that justice was served.

He said, “I deeply appreciate the unwavering support and commitment shown by my colleagues, community leaders, and citizens and the media throughout my administration.

“I want to also thank you for your positive support through your reports. The only regret I have in this state is that up till now we have not been able to arrest the person who shot the finance director.

“That’s the only regret I have and it still boils down to what we are saying, no information, no clues, it took us to so many places, it took us to even Ibadan. That is the only regret I have, but God knows that my successor will continue from where we stopped because it is important we get the culprit and God will assist my successor”.
